Alien Trilogy Lookback

One thing about the Sega Saturn that is quite noticeable is 3rd party support, this was pretty strong in 1996 with the Saturn not missing a massive amount of games the PlayStation had until 1997 onwards. Alien Trilogy came to the console thanks to Probe and Acclaim and honestly, this game still gives me an uneasy feeling when playing it, they really nailed how tense the movie universe was, from the get go, the music is eerie with various sound effects like thunder and screeching of creatures echoing through the music, you encounter hidden Face Huggers and Xenomorphs lurking behind doors at every turn often allowing the former too close to you allows the creature to leap up and engulf the screen in an attempt to live up to its namesake.

There are a good variation of weapons true to the films and objectively it’s often looking for keys to open doors whilst encountering victims of the Aliens, mercenaries of their own mission, the Queen Alien and even dog Aliens. I like that this game is near identical to the PlayStation version, I couldn’t see any stand out differences anyway. The graphics are dark and gloomy as you would expect but everything is presented well, the frame rate is consistent and the action comes in thick and fast, a very enjoyable version of a well-remembered game.

Alien Trilogy is available in large quantities still so a PAL version won’t trouble you for much more than a tenner, the Japanese release is around £25 due to Acclaim’s games not selling so hotly over there and surprisingly, the American version is around £35! So well worth importing a European version if you’ve got an Action Replay handy – stick some cheats on while you’re there, why not!
